Description
A barrel swivel is a small yet crucial piece of fishing tackle.
- Design: A barrel swivel consists of a pivoting joint with two rings attached to either end. The joint in the middle is shaped like a small barrel.
- Function: When you’re out fishing, especially with rotating lures or rigs (like inline spinners or metal spoons), the rolling swivel comes into play. These lures tend to rotate rapidly during retrieval, which can twist your fishing line. Line twists can cause knots, tangles, and even line breakage. The rolling swivel allows the lure or rig to rotate freely without twisting the line, preventing these issues.
- Performance Under Load: Rolling swivels are designed to perform well even when under pressure. They can spin and reduce line twist, making them particularly useful when casting or trolling lures in strong currents or turbulent waters.
- Tying a Swivel: To attach a rolling swivel to your fishing line, follow these steps:
- Pass the end of your fishing line through the swivel’s eye.
- Create a loop by doubling back the line parallel to the vertical line.
- Wrap the end of the loop around the main line and the loop at least five times.
- Pass the loop’s end through the small opening between the swivel’s eye and the wraps.
- Moisten the line and pull the standing line to tighten the knot.
- Trim any excess line and test the knot’s strength.
